1. Rotis/Bread/Pasta: Boiling grains/rice I can understand but then there were those who thought of grinding grains into a flour, making a dough out of the flour, and then baking/cooking it ... At each stage, the product looks/behaves nothing like the thing you started out with which makes it rather counter-intuitive. Brilliant!!
2. Weaving/thatching : Simple, but absolutely amazing ... taking a thread, and converting it into a interlaced surface.
3. Pulleys/levers: people have used these machines for ages before any formal knowledge of mechanics. Though I can visualize simple chance incidents leading to the discovery that a lever type structure would help!
